The AI Overview Spoiled Elle
I was texting with my dad about AI and all the things to think about.
- Could widen the gap between the people who own it and the people who don't
- Could speed up climate change
- Could cut jobs faster than we adapt
And/or:
- Could revolutionize bioengineering
- Could democratize access to "intelligence"
- Could empower small businesses with tooling needed to take on the establishment
It's a fun unparalleled development purely due to the breadth of existential threats it touches.
I obviously don't have a fix for any of that. And I'm not an AI doomer. We have a new tool at our disposal and we'll figure out how to use it. But I'd also like to add one more complaint to the pile. It's small and dumb and it captures how it's hard to figure out where this tool fits.
Everything past this point totally spoils a plot point from season one of Elle, the Legally Blonde prequel on Prime. If you haven't watched it and you'd like to keep it that way, stop scrolling!
The Spoiler
I've been watching Elle, the Legally Blonde prequel. A few episodes in, there's an end card dedication to James Van Der Beek, who passed away back in February. I am horrible with celebrity names, so I googled James Van Der Beek Elle. I wanted to know who he was in the cast.
Here's what the AI overview said:
Dean Wilson, a school superintendent and mayoral candidate who becomes entangled in an extortion scheme.
Great. I hadn't gotten there yet. That's literally the big reveal of the whole season!! Ugh!!!

Add it to the list! Exacerbated class divide, climate change, jobs, and now freaking spoilers. We've got a lot of work ahead of us.
